The ceramic of Vietri sul mare

Vietri sul mare is one of the most important coastal towns of the province of Salerno, famous for its ceramics. The oldest testimony of tile dates back to 1627. It represents Christ on the cross with Sant'Antonio da Padova and San Francesco on either side. Just in Piazza Vietri there is still a large panel consists of 42 tiles representing the Virgin Mary, the Maddalena and Saint Giovanni at the foot of the cross. In the back ground you see a landscape and sky with symbols of the Passion of Christ. The XVIII century has left more testimonies even under the aspect of items of popular use as furniture and pottery decorated with narrative motifs and popular life scenes. The XIX century is remembered for the tile with geometric, abstracted and naturalistic decoration performed by hand, used to make ceramic floor.
